Moushumi Chatterjee Speaks Out about Her Feud with Jaya Bachchan: A Walk Through Bollywood’s Diverse Relationships

Veteran Bollywood actress Moushumi Chatterjee has never been one to hold back in what she says. In a recent interview, she looked back on her long and frequently maligned relationship with fellow actress Jaya Bachchan. Her plain-speaking remarks gave a welcome insight into the emotional currents of Bollywood’s golden age—an industry as rich in ambition and art as it is in ego and rivalry.

A Misunderstood Statement
Chatterjee started by responding to a previous viral statement in which she was cited as saying that she is a “better person” than Jaya Bachchan. She explained that the comment was made out of context and that she was only complaining about constant comparisons between people. As per her, each person has their own path and nature and that the media habitually simplifies complex human relationships into headlines.

She also admitted that there was indeed tension between her and Jaya in their working years in the film industry, but she ascribed much of it to gossip and misconceptions. Chatterjee stressed that she was never completely submerged in the politics of the world of films—acting was part of her life, not the whole of it.

Class Divides and Early Privilege
Among the more vivid aspects of her introspection was how class issues might have affected relationships within the business. Moushumi Chatterjee, who hailed from an affluent family, spoke of how her youth was filled with privilege—vehicles, servants, and comfort were taken for granted. Others of her generation had less privileged backgrounds and had to struggle to attain the top spot.

She theorized that her independence financially and lack of desperation about being famous might have served to distinguish her and maybe rubbed someone the wrong way. There was a quiet tension between those who entered the field because they loved it and those who were there out of necessity. This, she believes, might have been at the source of some of the competition.

Being Replaced in Big Projects
Chatterjee also spoke candidly about her experience of being dropped from a big film opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She was informed by the director that her “tuning” with top male stars was not correct and that it was one of the reasons why she was dropped. Though disappointed, she did not let it dent her professionalism. She did not beg or protest—she just moved on, rather than get indulgent in back-room politics.

This anecdote reveals the more subtle politics that actresses, particularly those with strong ego and boundary- setting personalities, had to practice. As Chatterjee relates, refusing to play along with some power dynamics cost her sometimes—but it was a price she was willing to pay.

The ‘Koshish’ Episode
One of the most dramatic moments in their professional one-upmanship occurred while working on the 1972 film Koshish. Chatterjee had already filmed for several days before she saw Jaya Bachchan’s secretary visiting the set on a regular basis. Something was not right, she felt. Shortly afterward, she was told by the director of the film that she was being replaced.

The reason given was that she could not change her shooting schedule as she had other commitments on a personal level. Chatterjee, who was juggling work and family life, took the decision on her part, albeit graciously, though she thought on the sly that there was some behind-the-scenes manipulation involved. She quit the project without fussing and protesting.

Even with this setback, she had a professional working relationship with the director and even collaborated with him again in the later part of her career. This capacity to put aside personal grievances in the interest of work further underlined her practical and spirited attitude towards the profession.

A Lesson in Professional Grace
Through all the trying times, Moushumi Chatterjee’s story is one of dignity, courage, and insight. She does not discount the rivalries or the emotional costs they exact but refuses to view them in isolation from the grander tapestry of life at the cinema. She is still proud of the choices she made—whether it was standing up to power structures or keeping her cool under pressure.

Her own musings provide a good lesson, particularly in the current age of social media disputes and public reconciliations. True strength, as Chatterjee demonstrates, is in being consistent in one’s morality even when the limelight becomes unforgiving. Her tale is not merely one of competition but of the ethical principles that make a person stand much more than their filmography.

In a field that is so often characterized by rivalry and transient allegiances, Moushumi Chatterjee is a standout for having remained grounded. Her memories are not merely recollections— they are testaments to the strength of self-respect, and the value of allowing work, rather than rumor, to shape one’s legacy.
