Manchester United delivered a dominant 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final at San Mamés on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Bruno Fernandes scored twice, with Casemiro scoring another, to give United a commanding lead going into the return leg at Old Trafford on May 8.

Early Pressure from Athletic Bilbao
The game kicked off with Athletic Bilbao imposing early pressure. Inaki Williams saw a header from close range saved by United goalkeeper Andre Onana, while Alex Berenguer forced Onana into a second save. Though the early going favored the hosts, United’s defense held up, thanks to Victor Lindelöf’s important clearances and the alertness of Onana.

Turning Point: Red Card for Bilbao
The momentum of the game changed in the 37th minute when Athletic’s defender Daniel Vivian was given a red card for fouling United’s Rasmus Højlund within the penalty area. The foul allowed a penalty, which Fernandes coolly converted to give United a 1-0 advantage.

Fernandes Seals the Victory
On the verge of halftime, Fernandes scored a second goal, coming courtesy of a deft backheel from Manuel Ugarte and completing with finesse. His contribution played a pivotal role in securing the away win, earning United a confident 2-0 lead.

Manager’s Perspective
United’s manager Ruben Amorim praised the victory as “the best result” during his time at the club, commending the resilience of the team and the clinical finishing. He stressed that concentration must be sustained for the second leg, regardless of the good position.

Looking Ahead
With a 3-0 advantage, Manchester United stand well-placed to progress to the final. The return leg at Old Trafford will prove pivotal, and United will look to get the job done and seal a Europa League final place.
