EPS Suggests Future Alliance with BJP Close to 2026 Elections

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has hinted in a major political turn of events that any such decision regarding the possibility of an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 2026 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections would be taken nearer to the polls. EPS expressed this after he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

EPS explained that the meeting was about Tamil Nadu issues like law and order and the Mullaperiyar dam issue, and not political strategy or electoral alliance. “The political scenario will change, and we will think of alliances when the elections approach,” he said.

AIADMK and BJP split up in 2023 after political strategy differences and leadership issues. But recent comments by EPS indicate that there is still scope for reunification. The AIADMK leader specifically made it clear that the party’s main agenda is consolidating its hold on Tamil Nadu and resolving issues of the state’s people.

During the meeting, EPS is said to have emphasized the requirement of more central support for Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure projects and flood relief initiatives. He also expressed concern regarding the safety and water management problems of the Mullaperiyar dam and called upon the Centre to help mediate a settlement between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

AIADMK’s next political gameplan should be evident once the elections for 2026 come nearer. It is assumed that EPS’s cautious path represents his choice of retaining flexibility for any options at the expense of AIADMK’s political autonomy.

EPS’s comments have fueled speculation in political circles, with BJP leaders showing hope for a potential rapprochement. But EPS insisted that AIADMK would make a decision depending on the political situation nearer to the elections.

This move highlights the changing political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, where alliance politics may prove to be the game-changer in the 2026 assembly elections.
